Coaching and Mentoring
Every blade of grass has its angel bending over it saying, “Grow. Grow.” ---The Talmud
On your life’s journey, if you want to accomplish the goals and dreams you envision for yourself, you may find you need someone to nudge you along---stretch you---keep you focused.
Think of it as someone who blows the dust from your eyes like camels do for each other in the desert. Think of it as someone who helps you see you can be far better than you think you can be---someone to help you see you can dig deep and make the dreams that are dreaming within you a reality.
That someone is a coach---aka a personal life trainer. A person who is going to help you ask the right questions of yourself so you can live into the answers.
Questions like: “What are your deepest desires?" "What makes you come alive?” and “What is the work you have been given to get there?”
Your Over the Edge guides have been there in the ditches just like you----stretching, groaning---letting God dreams his dreams in us and working with wise counsel to make them a reality. We don’t have all the answers, but we do know that asking the right questions for each of us is the key.
We also know from our training and personal experience that if you have another guy motivating you, pushing you, coaching you---your iron gets sharpened. You become the man God intended you to be---the man you already are---no more, no less---you just might not have discovered you yet. But if you can work with another guy to help you connect with your dreams and passions you will find the inner man that is in each of us---you’ll find out your hard work and effort has begun to pay off. You’ll find yourself a proud owner of everything that can’t be bought.
We often coach guys through life issues like:
- Setting goals at work
- Career changes
- Mid-life crisis
- Finding your identity as a man
- Finding direction and focus to let go of the false stuff us guys sometimes pick up to numb the pain of life.
A coaching relationship begins with you reaching out and asking an Over the Edge guide to walk alongside you for a while.
- You set the pace---you determine how often you want to meet by phone or in person.
- And you establish as you grow, how long you want your coach to run with you.
- In return, your coach will ask you to stay committed to the process and to yourself and to pay a small stipend in an amount you decide is reasonable and fair (a typical stipend is $25-$50 for each session).
- We recommend you give yourself 3-6 months of either monthly or bi-weekly meetings with your coach to ensure you get the most bang from your coaching experience.

Scripture says that iron sharpens iron. In other words, men aren’t supposed to have to go it alone—we don’t need to white knuckle it. We are hard-wired to have someone else walk alongside of us---someone who is a little further along on their own spiritual journey to mentor, guide and mirror for us who we are---someone who breathes life into and says, “Grow!” That man is a coach---someone we believe God puts into our life to help us become the captain of our own souls.
If you want to be the captain of your own soul---if you have dreams dreaming in you that you want to become a reality---if you want to find your passion and grab hold of it---then take a step, but make it the biggest step you can take.
